I should reword what I said - the Proud Boys are bad and they will kill people, for sure. So they need to be stopped. But I don't think it's gonna be the Proud Boys who help usher in fascism in any way, I think that will be 100% on the cops.
In the event of a fascist takeover of the US, you are like 99% right in thinking that local police departments as well as groups like CBP, ICE, and the DHS are going to be far more of a threat than the Proud Boys. Proud Boys will be used as a front, however. If the state wants to instigate a conflict with protesters they aren't going to do the deed themselves and create a Kent State-like scenario, they'll just do it like they did in Kenosha and kettle the protesters towards the counter protesters, sparking a conflict, and allowing the fascist police department to swoop in and restore law and order like the "heroes" they are.
I think in a way they will be helping with the ushering, because 2%ers boogaloo boys etc. will be a front that can be pointed to as if to say "See? The people love this fascism shit." They are kind of a legitimizing force, I guess.
The proud boys, the boogs, the threepers, and other "unaffiliated" reactionary mobs are what are going to be doing the most reprehensible acts. The police are going to be aiding, abetting, and protecting them.
