CBD and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD, but not THC or other congeneric cannabinoids tested, potently block SARS-CoV-2 replication in lung epithelial cells. CBD acts after viral entry, inhibiting viral gene expression and reversing many effects of SARS-CoV-2 on host gene transcription. CBD inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication in part by up-regulating the host IRE1α RNase endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response and interferon signaling pathways. In matched groups of human patients from the National COVID Cohort Collaborative, CBD (100 mg/ml oral solution per medical records) had a significant negative association with positive SARS-CoV-2 tests. This study highlights CBD as a potential preventative agent for early-stage SARS-CoV-2 infection and merits future clinical trials.

They immediately go on to caution against using CBD against covid but COME ON Y'ALL. Are you readin' what I'm readin'?

CBD is, to my understanding, pretty fucking benign and almost impossible to like OD on. IMO there's no reason outside of cost NOT to be juiced to the gills on CBD all the time, at least if you're worried about covid

Note: the studies note that THC actually inhibits these effects, so you can't just get high on the reefer, you need actual CBD. It also notes various methods of delivery might be more or less biologically active as CBD is very hydrophobic and easily forms clumps that get broken down in the liver

It weirds me out, honestly, like, with all the other snake oil bullshit attributed to CBD, why not this too? And with people desperate to try literally anything to not die of covid, to the point they drink horse dewormer and their intestines fall out........ why hasn't this gotten any attention? It's like some kind of SCP-####, a blankness in people's attention. This relatively cheap, ubiquitous, non toxic drug could help cut down both covid transmission and severity of infections but nobody talks about doing CBD as a covid prophylactic except for me being a crank about it!

      Edibles should work but idk how efficacious they are in this context compared to other forms. The main thing imo is knowing if it's actually got CBD, the first study iirc mentions a lot of "full spectrum hemp oil" products are just like 0.3% or something

      I would imagine they would. They make gummies that have just CBD in them as well as ones that have THC as well. Both of them have CBD.

    To test the effect of CBD on SARS-CoV-2 replication, we pretreated A549 human lung carcinoma cells expressing exogenous human ACE2 receptor (A549-ACE2) for 2 hours with 0 to 10 μM CBD before infection with SARS-CoV-2.

    They put it directly on lung cells, not exactly real world evidence.

      That is one part of what is being discussed here though, and this bit of in vitro experimentation isn't related to the statistical trends noted, where people who were on CBD had a significantly lower rate of infection

      I'm high, drunk and turnt af but i'm just gonna say Im pretty sure blasting lung cells with cbd isn't something The Scientists do to prove cbd does something v covid, but rather to help understand how it does what it do by observing how it interacts with a very specific tissue in a very specific circumstance, which some people might interpret as "not having any effect outside of these narrow circumstances" which, idk, i'd say is an inaccurate view. A more accurate view would be "oh, this is how they figured out it specifically triggers these particular intracellular immune responses"

      Like CBD, 7-OH-CBD effectively inhibited SARS-CoV-2 replication in A549-ACE2 cells (Fig. 2C) and was nontoxic to cells (fig. S2, H and I). Analysis of blood plasma levels in healthy individuals taking 1500 mg daily of FDA-approved CBD solution (Epidiolex) showed a maximal concentration (Cmax) at 7 days for CBD and 7-OH-CBD of 1.7 and 0.56 μM, respectively; the Cmax can be further increased several-fold by coadministration with a high-fat meal (15). Taken in aggregate, these results suggest that the effective plasma concentrations of CBD and its metabolite are within the therapeutic range to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection in humans.

      Huh sounds like the same thing you're quoting as "the actual study" (which is the same as my initial link btw, at least nothing i quoted is anything i haven't read before) except it literally says healthy individuals on 1500mg of an FDA approved CBD had sufficient concentrations to exhibit therapeutic effects in vivo

      The "omg in vitro" argument really doesn't work when therapeutic effects are easily attainable with few side effects, it's not like they're recommending mainlining bleach

    I'm not really familiar with cbd dosages but they were doing 100mg/ml doses, which seems quite high. So if you're planning on using it for prevention consider that.

      Yeah idk what that really means though because that's just telling you what the concentration of whatever without telling you how much was administered? Like if it's 100mg/ml but they only took 1ml, that's 100mg of cbd

        I looked at the supplemental, where the methods are, and it would appear that the most effective dose (highest they used) was 10 micro liters, which would be 1/5th of a drop from a tincture. If this is correct then you could get away with a single drop from a lower concentration and be fine.

    it might inhibit them but does it say how much? an order of magnitude means even a 2x inhibition is still at least 5x better

      Yeah i'm not suggesting it's a panacea but it's like masking, it's a numbers game, every little bit of virus that doesn't infect, or doesn't replicate after infecting, is a bit less covid for the rest of you, or to spread to others. Like she still got covid but maybe it's a bit less severe than it would have otherwise been, yknow

      I think about this cbd shit a lot because what else are you supposed to do about something like long covid? All you can do is look at things that mitigate the severity of infection, if you can't entirely prevent the risk, and when i hear "an order of magnitude" in regards to a reduction in infections, i'm like, yeah what tell me more
