The fact that this picture is being so circulated kind of shows how extremely rare it is that this happens in capitalism, contrary to the myth of the self-made-human
And the myth of staying loyal to your employer benefiting the worker too.
Big companies love promoting a token worker to upper management. Someone to point out to the low level staff, as if to say, "Work hard, don't piss off management, rat out your coworkers and someday you might be picked to be an executive". It's like the flaming hot Cheetos guy, they were fine letting him lie about his story and pay him to be a marketing VP, just to make the workers think they might go from janitor to executive someday.
Now I understand why porky insists that “networking” should be a job requirement.
Yeah, it’s a way to legally discriminate, but also forces people to be loyal. Be like the guy in the pic or enjoy your unemployment.
Legendary resume - I worked at the same company and was hired internally for advancement for forty years
Basically every soviet general in WW2 was some rando son of a peasant who fought in the civil war and climbed the ranks.
Yeah so
- you wheel the old experienced person out to boost morale and get a couple of articles written about how the company is in safe hands
- you gut the company (layoffs) and don't purchase new stock, invest in new product lines etc. to artificially boost profitability
- you dump the old CEO, dump the stock and try and sell it off whole or in parts
Bonus points for Nike's decline coming from taking McKinsey's advice in the first place - here they are just before Nike publicly started doing really poorly

Great how that worked out for her. I'm going to keep job hopping because that is almost always a better option. There are hundreds, if not thousands of interns and salespeople at Nike and only one can be CEO. You need to be super lucky to get promoted each step.
