Since I'm a mecha head I would have added Getter Robo and Mazinger Z and their respective movies. I think american kids would have been responsive to super robot shows like this since Gundam Wing cleaned house when it debuted on the programing block.
I wonder if the 2002 Hunter x Hunter series could have been brought over too.
Toonami was perfect in my opinion. It was my gateway to anime and other types of animation.
It was good! I just wish it lasted a bit longer on prime time and brought over more.
Mazinger Z would be a very Toonami show to be fair. Mazinger Z paired with/followed by Astro Boy would be sick.
Did they have Trigun? I honestly don't know but man Trigun was a fucking banger.
The show later aired on Adult Swim in the United States with an English dub from March 31, 2003 to May 13, 2003. Reruns of Trigun continued to air on Adult Swim until August 2009, when the network lost the rights to air the show.
I saw Trigun from bootleg dvds my friend had from hong kong lol
Oh nice. At least I wasn't off with the vibe. Anyway I watched it recently and outside of the main character being an type it holds up well and the 2 prominent fem characters are awesome so if recommend it. Can't say anything about the reboot I haven't seen it.
I also had Trigun bootlegs! Mine had full art and everything but they were obviously not official (I think I paid like 20USD for the whole season.
Did they have Bleach? I'm pretty sure I watched it on Crunchyroll when it was still an illegal free fansub site
Is Getter Robo really appropriate for children though? I may be getting it confused with something else, but didn't it involve a lot of adult themes and some nudity?
I think the original show from the 70's was aimed at kids, at least kids aged who were consuming stuff like gundam wing. The later movies and OVAs were for adults.
I must've only seen the later stuff then. If we're doing 70s anime, Astro boy should totally be on the toonami list as well.
Never get too into MR, played the first game but only for the novelty of the game reading music cds to make monsters. The anime was usually background noise for me in the morning getting ready for school if I wasn't watching Beast Wars.
did Yu Yu Hakusho ever play on Toonami? I know it played in the very late night/saturday Adult Swim anime blocks. I would move it earlier into Toonami.
Don't remember it on toonami, would be a good fit, I remember renting the movie as a kid.
Was the old HxH any good? Big fan of the later reboot but I've never watched the original or the OVAs.
i would Add the Jojo part 3 Ova i think it would have been decently recibed, plus since its only 6 episodes i think i would have been easy for it to have reruns and built a bigger fanbase for it, all tho if im remembering right the USA has more strict censorship laws than Mx so it would probably be censored a lot
I would have added Getter Robo and Mazinger Z
I dont know how similar toonami USA and MX were, but i do remember the MX use to rerun the Zoids anime a lot, so i think people really liked mecha animes
I would've done Gundam X instead of original Mobile Suit Gundam. MSG is a better show, but Gundam X definitely would have been a hit in the early 2000s North America
Yeah it's surprising they didn't bring over X. I wonder if it not doing well in Japan played a role in that?
Sunrise Japan fucked up and absolutely refused to license it since it bombed in Japan. Totally missed opportunity, but who knows, probably still would have fucked with the release schedule either way.
I've never seen HxH, but I totally agree that it would have done well. Yu Yu Hakusho and DBZ were massive back then. I haven't seen the 70s Getter or Mazinger anime, but the Getter OVAs would have done well on Adult Swim (like with 08th MS Team and some of the other stuff they had). Shit, they had stuff like Blue Submarine no. 6 that was super mid lol
Added: Berserk 1997
Censors like "umm we're going to have to cut about 89%, we have 3 episodes left".
