Still is somewhat, it's easy to find French versions of most things. Though it's slowly coming out of wide usage after peaking in XVII-XIX century.

While we wouldnt be concerned if he was learning a useful second language like Mandarin or Arabic, this odd choice of a language - especially one with so much baggage has us worried.
Any chance he is being exposed to unwanted ideologies? Why was he hiding this?
