The man has worked his whole life in environmentalism. So I'm not hugely surprised. But I am mildly, pleasantly surprised by his bluntness on capitalism.
Didn't he just drop that documentary blaming the global south for overpopulation?
Hmm, it seems like he used to place a ton of emphasis on the overpopulation thing in the past and is now in the process of realizing that there are more important things at play while still clinging a bit to the idea of overpopulation.
There's certainly a distinction to be made between "the global south is outbreeding us" and "if there were fewer humans, they would have less of an impact on the environment"
The thing about overpopulation is that it isn't the birth rate that is causing it. Advances in medicine are raising the mortality age, whereas birth rates are staying relatively steady globally. Now I'm not blaming it on older people, generational conflict is counter revolutionary, but the numbers don't lie. It doesn't have to be a problem, but the concept of overpopulation could very easily be spun to support ecofash ideas, and stuff like he's producing tend to support that idea. Considering the amount of influence Attenborough has in the UK I'd hope you're right about him.
He's an ecofascist and just because he's made one remark about curbing "excess" capitalism does not mean we should ignore that he continually blames overpopulation, or amplify his voice. He will always have class solidarity.
