The show was interesting at first, but then they have a high school girl strapped down by aliens trying to SA her. The whole scene is played very light despite what's happening. Also, another high schooler gets SA'd off screen as well

Fuck that and not watching more

What the fuck the anime industry has been fucking poisoned by porn brained otaku

Thank god we still have Delicious in Dungeon or I would struggle to find any good modern anime that isn't just hentai bait for pedos. It's that dire.

I just read through the r/anime thread and was glad to see I wasn't the only one pretty distraught over how the scene was played out in a grossly sexual way. Like the show has an 8.6 on MAL lol. I felt like I was going crazy and the only one who was put off by this

Same here. The fact that the scene starts with her in her underwear already made me uncomfortable, and then it kept getting worse as it went on.

I was pretty distraught as well, both with the sudden occurrence and how the scene was played for laughs. It's a real shame, because I like the animation and character designs, but it was pretty clear from the second episode as well that the show is going to continue not taking this stuff seriously and being gross.

I saw it coming from a mile away

Good animation + action + coomer nonsense + incel wish fulfillment = masterpiece, according to mainstream weebery.

Dandadan's not the first, and probably not the last.

Some Hexbears were talking about this show so I went to watch it and was really surprised by the first episode. Was this not in the manga? Like why would they recommend it without saying anything about SA of teenagers right off the bat?

It is in the manga but the anime has some particularly egregious angles that make it worse imo. There's one other scene later in the manga at an onsen that's uncomfortable too. Just a heads up if it's something you're gonna continue

Huh. I have only watched Ping-Pong and the Tatami Galaxy but I never got that vibe. Can you elaborate? (Not trying to argue with you, just curious)

Mainly to me just the way that he always centers the story around this incel lite main character who walks away w his manic pixie dream girl by the end of the story without the relationship feeling earned at all and in fact usually the main character is quite misogynistic in his own way

It's been a while since I watched Tatami Galaxy but I always got the impression that the MC did go through a lot of growth. But I'll have to rewatch it. If you haven't seen Ping Pong I'd highly recommend it. It's such a wholesome character study.

This take is bewildering to me, given Yuasa's history and that of the studio he founded. Science Saru exists in part because he thought it was important that more voices exist within Japanese animation- it's one of the few studios with a multi-cultural staff, and when he retired as president he passed the role to Eunyoung Choi, the only Korean woman with any prominence at all in the industry.

He made a show that had actual Japanese nationalists mad at him, because it was about a mixed couple and their family trying to survive a natural disaster and it painted racists in a bad light.

The director of Dandandan, Fuga Yamashiro, previously worked on Keep your Hands of Eizouken! and Tatami Time Machine Blues as an assistant director, Dandandan is his directorial debut.

I've been reading the manga and really enjoy how Momo and Okarun's relationship is developing. But I will not fault anyone for dropping off. There's one other scene that's uncomfortable from the manga. It wasn't nearly as bad as the first chapter but again not gonna hold it against someone for checking out. The older I get the more I groan at that kind of stuff especially in shounen works. It's just thrown in there to get the demographic of teen boys horned up so they'll buy more copies of Jump.

I've been thinking about whether I want to try another episode since last night, because I really did like everything else. The style especially was great. I feel like I have a higher tolerance for unfortunate anime things, but idk. My immediate reaction was this is so egregious that it shouldn't get a pass

Idk if I'm qualified to speak on this, but imo I think there's enough going on in the show that I'd still generally recommend it, despite it's problematic parts.

The show's about adolescents dealing with sexuality and growing up, and coping with the kind of societal expectations gender places on you (the aliens want Momo's uterus, the ghost steals Okarun's wiener). In the quiet moments when Momo and Okarun drop their pretenses and just be themselves and are honest with each other, the story really is quite sweet as a romance and it's maybe pointing to a healthier and more equitable vision of gender relations.

        • is my take, but also SA is a very difficult topic that I think the show probably didn't handle as well as it ought to have so yeah if you feel really uncomfortable with the tone I think maybe it's safe to drop

Every quiet moment between Okarun and Momo makes my heart melt. Especially when they hold hands. It's refreshing to see a naturally developing romance that isn't filled with BAKA ECCHI *SLAP. Looking at you, Ranma 1/2

To be fair to Ranma that story is basically 35 years old now and was considered progressive back then

Oh for sure. I give it a lot of grace. My friend group is watching the remake for our anime nights so it's the most recent example in my brain.

There's still a general ecchi vibe that goes on with the show from the next couple episodes I've seen, so fair warning. Genitals and jokes about them are a major plot point.

That's totally fair. I don't want to feel like I'm pushing it on you or anyone but I generally live by the 3 episode rule. Also if are into hot older women the grandma character should show up in episode 3 and she's my favorite in the whole series.

Yes holy shit. I saw the OP and thought "wow this show looks fun". The animation is great, some of the dialog is real funny, the romance is cute so far, but holy shit that first episode. And the second seems to be saying that this this might be a pattern. Very gross.

Ah, yeah dangit. I clocked the general pervy-ness but didn't think about the SA as their own separate problematic things. Sorry about that. I'll add CWs to my comments I made about the show.

Putting sexual assault in stories purely for shock and/or sexual-gratification sucks, putting them in stories as part of real character or necessary story development works but the focus of the content must absolutely not be about making the scene give anyone in its audience a hardon which this absolutely fails at. If you don't see how "Well acccchtually the sexy time is necessary for awakening their powers" I think you need to do some self-crit and ask yourself if the very worst of this industry has shifted your perception of what's ok and what's not.

Are you taking the piss? The directorial focus is repeatedly on sexualising shots, there is no debate here, it just is. You've very clearly let this medium get to your head.

Liking the show despite its problematic elements is one thing and gets a pass here but being entirely in denial about things anyone with basic media literacy can see gets you yeeted.

the character is a teenager, that's the biggest issue here. the ero part of that subgenre should not apply to her at all

I have my own thoughts on a situation like this being depicted to an adult and how this is often a very clumsy and cheap way to force character growth

the character is a teenager, that’s the biggest issue here.

Pretty difficult to see a mainstream anime/manga that doesn't do that in some level. I don't think that this is okay, but we need to recognize that this is a much bigger problem.

a situation like this being depicted to an adult

Well, technically Dandandan is a Shounen, made for teenagers. I have more problems with an adult drawing that, actually.

But anyway, I don't believe that the eroticism in ero-guru is made to make viewers horny, on the contrary.
