they're pronouns. that's it.
no in all seriousness though, language evolves and most pronouns are gendered. some people don't want to be called "they/them" because it doesn't resonate with them. by definition any pronoun that isn't she/her, he/him, or they/them is a neopronoun. so by rejecting someone's use of a neopronoun, we're forcing them to pick one of three boxes.
I don't have neopronouns, so I shouldn't be the one to explain (because I don't have the experiential knowledge). but I just wanted to share that we can't claim to be inclusive if we gatekeep what we don't understand. if you don't "get" neopronouns, then maybe just accept that there's something you don't get. you don't have to understand it to be accepting. it takes almost no effort to respect someone's identity, and it makes for a better community.
also if someone has the energy to add more info on neopronouns in the comments (i'm v tired from doing nothing all day), please do!
