I got here about a year after the site was created and as a result I missed all the silver legion stuff and for the longest time I thought the silver legion stuff was a reference to the Silver Legion of America, aka the Silver Shirts, an American esoteric fascist organization that was active in the lead up to ww2.
I think that was the intent, but is way funnier.
Oh, yeah I could see the original troll self-aggrandizing in that way (although the original silver shirts are in fact, extremely embarrassing) and then getting turned into a Nate Silver joke.
