It sucks. I remember when the 2015 Charlie Hebdo shooting happened I was more on the New Atheist/ all religions bad side. I’ve since realized that a lot if that is just laundering Islamophobia through the Reason & Logic TM lens, so left leaning people can feel good about it. Muslims are pathologized as being inherently violent and the historical and continuing violence against Muslims is dismissed and ignored.
I’m still an atheist but the both sidesism is totally power flattening. It doesn’t matter that Charlie Hebdo mocks the pope as well, France is a majority catholic country. If you think that is the same as /pol/ meme level racist caricatures targeting a marginalized and oppressed community, I don’t know what to tell you.
And I wasn’t trying to say the teacher or the Charlie Hebdo staff deserved to get murdered, it’s just really fucked that the reaction then and now is “I guess we just haven’t been racist enough, time to double down.”

Normalizing Islamophobia, on the other hand, has a proven track record of getting innocent people hurt. It empowers bigots. It also makes the terrible assumption that the climate of criticizing Islam is done in good faith, and not just a way of justifying bigotry toward people who look different. It normalizes xenophobia, racism, and islamophobia all in one convenient and disgusting package.

The Rotheram grooming gangs here really revealed a lot of islamophobia. I'm amazed at how people just lapped up the police's account that political correctness meant they felt unable to do anything when anyone who knows knows that the police don't need an excuse to be racist. Hell, all the evidence pointed to the fact that they did nothing because the victims were working class and the police dismissed their claims and stories as coming from attention seeking sluts who deserved what they got.
I grew up in a really fucking rough area. The girl who lived opposite was pimped out by her stepdad at 12 to her uncles for cigarettes. Really awful stuff. The police did nothing and returned her when she ran away. The school must have known too. I can very easily believe the police's attitude to the victims here. Far more so than them being the only non racist force in the UK.
The bastards that did it fully deserve to be dragged through the courts because they're evil pieces of shit but boy did it expose a lot of racism and islamophobia.

Some white european populations ARE muslim. I mean at least they think about themselves as such. Whether slavs count as white is another question. but yeah, in general anti-muslim sentiment is cornerstone of national identity in Eastern Europe.
People here seem to be confusing anti-imperialism with supporting socialism. We should be against western imperialism but we shouldn't be supporting religious reactionaries. This is why we need a vanguard party.
The relative underdevelopment of the Islamic world (due to imperialism) is why large Muslim populations even exist in western Europe. Most Muslim immigrants to Europe in the past century would have preferred to stay in their home countries if they had the same opportunities. Some degree of cultural conflict and misunderstanding is inevitable when people from different cultures interact for the first time but capitalists have deliberately oppressed and hyperexploited the immigrants (which makes them resent the native populations) and deliberately fed the native populations' prejudices to keep the working class divided.
