Can Americans not get by with a VPN and an APK download? I really don't know.
They could but they won't, for the same reason you don't see many people from mainland China past the great firewall. It's just more convenient to use an alternative site.
iPhones can't do APK downloads I think they're locked down to the app store apps unless you jailbreak them
The format for iOS is called IPA. Unless you are in the EU and have iOS 17.4+ (which obviously isn't the case for Americans), you have to either buy a $99/year developer certificate so your apps don't expire for a year, or deal with solutions like AltStore to handle the fact that your sideloaded apps not from the App Store are going to expire after just 7 days (not to mention the fact that there's a limit per Apple ID)

for many countries you can get temporary or permanent access to a VOIP phone number for texts. do you need to keep access to it for continual login verification, or is it one-time only?
