This argument regarding the mandate is precisely why I favor voting third party (e.g. Green, or I guess PSL) regardless of the spoiler effect. A Dem winning by a slimmer margin and Greens/PSL getting bigger (though still small) pieces of the pie means that Dem is on thin fucking ice, as they should be. Voting for a Dem on a lesser-evil/harm-reduction basis gives them a bigger mandate than they will ever deserve.
Deflating the mandate is unironically a good reason to abstain.
