I'm sure there are genuine Libertarian Socialist, but most are just new leftists who saw some Chomsky videos on youtube, but have been fed anti-communist propaganda their whole lives. So they just call themselves Libertarian Socialist because calling yourselves Communist is icky. Some will grow out of "Vote Dems, US greatest country ever" Chomsky and maybe discover Parenti, and realize the near impossible task the historical Communist experience faced against much more powerful hostile Capitalist forces.

The political compass is bad, but if you've literally never learned about libertarian socialism, it's roughly the lower left quadrant of the spectrum. In the farthest corner are the anarcho-communists, a subset of libertarian socialist thought. Other associated tendencies are mutualism, [anarcho-]syndicalism, and communalism. Theorists include Proudhon, Book him, and Bakunin.
