Wasn’t the US response to the last hurricane famously inept? I mean, I get it. It might seem like a materially better choice to people there than going it alone, that’s just another expression of colonisation though, being dependant on the oppressor nation. It’s part of the system of control.
It’ll be interesting to see how this shakes out. The dems could certainly use another two senate seats (which they’ve always assumed they’d get if this happened).

Yes, and that's the reason why opinion shifted in favor of statehood. If they were a state, then they would probably get a better response, since among other things politicians would have to care about them.
