When you're trying to expand a section of a videogame wiki and then an ad loads into the space where you just put your finger. I swear to Christ those sites load the ads last for that exact purpose. Fuck you games wiki sites.

I haven't seen an ad on the internet in years. Pihole/Adguard home, Ublock origin and YouTube vanced are the way to go these days

I've got ublock on my computer, but do you have a recommendation for adblocking on mobile? I already use vanced, but I've never been able to get browser ads to go away :angery:

I use Pihole/Adguard home type software on my home network. It's a DNS level ad blocker that basically runs a DNS server on the network that blocks ads there. I run it on an old laptop in my closet. You can also run it on a raspberry pi or similar.

Alternatively you can use Firefox preview on mobile, you can use Ublock on that. Alternatively you can change the DNS/private dns in your network settings to one of Adguard's servers

If I keep my PC on at all times, can it do the same thing your old laptop does? That is to say, run a DNS server that blocks ads coming through the router, so that when my phone is connected to the Wi-Fi it doesn't see them? I can live with still seeing ads when I'm out of my house.

Definitely going to look into that, thanks.

Actually, if you'd indulge me, I have one more question. Does the speed of the device running the adguard software limit your browsing speed or your overall internet speed? Does the internet traffic actually get rerouted through the device, or does it just work like a fishing net, pulling out ads as they pass?

No it doesn't effect the speed of your internet, it just handles DNS requests, not the actual data passing through. No internet traffic gets routed through the device, just the DNS requests of your router. It could cause a slowdown if it got a ton of requests at once, but that's negligible. I just checked and on my computer it says the average processing time is 35 milliseconds, so a miniscule effect.
