Democrats: a diverse group of military-bureaucrats who are so focused on norms and “balance.” they get outplayed by the far-right every time.

I don't like the Last Jedi or Luke's characterization in it for multiple reasons but I love the fact that Luke openly acknowledges in the movie: "Stop idealizing the past...the Jedi got wiped out and the Old Republic morphed into the Empire for a goddamn reason."

Ah! But what's the reason? Was it how they ruled, as a militarist order on top of a federalist union of extremely unequal planets that included slaves? Or because they didn't sufficiently defend their rule, lacking a security/intelligence apparatus that would root out traitors and a military force loyal to them instead of a would-be tyrant?

...Or option C, because the franchise depends on the endless repetition of the dashing underdog rogues defeating the superior evil force because it was their divine destiny only for evil to triumph again, then fall again, then triumph again, all for no discernible reason whatsoever.

Lol...I mean this is basically why Lucas saw ROTJ as the definitive end of the saga since it was released. His original outline (which differed significantly in many ways) conceived it as 9 parts but most of those key events from 7-9 were eventually wrapped into 6 (reveal of Luke's sister, the confrontation with the Emperor, etc.)

If they actually wanted to continue the saga proper then they'd really need to actually change the formula up and get into the reconstruction efforts like some of the EU did. Maybe even develop some interesting contention among Luke and the others if he disagrees with where the New republic is going. Eitherway...yeah...that's got a lot less universal appeal then dashing rogues I suppose.

Likewise! I love that meme. Seriously: I totally dig the idea of grumpy grizzled old man cynic Luke. I'm just not a fan of how they got him there. The idea that Luke would have turned cynical and decided his entire philosophical worldview was wrong because he had a moment of weakness and nearly did the antithesis of everything he ever preached is just flat on its face idiocy. Its like a priest rejecting his faith because he was tempted to break one of the commandments or something. It makes no sense. If anything he would have doubled down and reaffirmed his position to never be tempted again.

If they wanted to make Luke a cynic it had to come from a failure of his idealistic worldview rather then a personal failure to follow it.
