Are German politicians as cucked as those in my country who thinks we should be grateful about the US empire "protecting us"?

Our government consists of the conservative party and the socdems (read: our version of Blairites, yes the party that killed Rosa). Their angle on this is that they want Americans to stay not for protection, but because the regions in which US bases are make their money mostly by selling overpriced shit to the soldiers, and the regions would be significantly hurt without the soldiers.

They still want the troops here though, so it really doesn't make a difference

They usually are. German politics is dominated by the slowest, most phlegmatic conservatives in the world, so they still have no idea what to do without NATO even though the Cold War has been over for 30 years now. But the vast majority of the people here don't want to wage America's wars, so our government is in constant denial about the wars we're involved in and they hardly get covered in the press at all.

They've even tried to censor leaked reports about the state of the war in Afghanistan by claiming that they are copyright protected. And they got away with it to at least some degree. The Afghanistan war is still not officially referred to as a war here, but as "our mission in Afghanistan" or some shit like that if it even comes up at all. Merkel once held a speech where she openly admitted that she's completely ignoring the will of the people when it comes to foreign policy and presented that as a good thing. Because it takes time to convince the ignorant masses how important it is to be America's murder assistant. I mean, she didn't say it like that, she said it nicer, but that's the gist of it.

BTW, if you adress any of this publicly, people toeing the party line will call you a Putin loving chud. The brain worms burrow deeply here.

We also would've been in Iraq had she been chancellor at that time.

Populist chuds will be surprisingly open to these positions, although i can't shake the suspicion that some of them are just anti-US because it clashes with their idealist fixation on sovereignty. On the left, there's a very broad pacifist consensus among SocDems, Greens, and Leftists, but for the SPD and the Greens that consensus doesn't extend beyond the party base - the SPD has actually turned down coalitions with the leftists twice because they're openly anti-imperialist.

The only real support comes from ideologically entrenched centrists and from economic stakeholders, who want to export arms (a major industry in Germany), get cheap ressources, or control trade routes. There are people here who profiteer off US imperialism a lot, and as usual, they won't let go of their investments.

OK, so this might sound weird but I'm looking to immigrate from my country and applying for a master's abroad. How is the climate for incoming immigrants in germany rn and how is the job market for IT professionals?

Job markets are tricky atm due to oncoming Covid recession, but IT is generally sought after. I have no idea how to apply for work visa, but i've heard it's buerocratic and complicated and from all my encounters with our government, i'd actually be surprised if it wasn't a kafkaesque nightmare.

Climate for immigrants depends a lot on where exactly you end up and if you're visibly part of a minority - Berlin is extremely cosmopolitic, places like Cologne or Hamburg are as well, but some rural areas can get nasty, or just outright bizarre from what i've seen when hanging around there with black or brown people.

I'm used to bureaucratic and complicated processes when dealing with the government so that's not an issue. Good to know the job market is not completely dead. I'm looking to apply to a place called Passau. What have you heard or seen about it? Is it immigrant friendly?

Wow, that's deepest Bavaria. Really picturesque place, the people tend to be more outgoing, friendly and hospitable than the average German, but they're at the same time also more traditionalist and conservative. They'll help you to fit in, but they also expect you to fit in, get to know local customs, learn the language etc. It's not an area where i'd worry about getting in trouble for where you come from, but i'd be careful around cops. If you'd happen to be into drugs in any way, you'd have to be cautious there in ways that just don't apply to the rest of the country. Like, up north, we just light up spliffs in the park or at concerts and nobody cares, that doesn't fly down south.

Wow thanks for the reply! Its good to know that its hospitable, conservative or no. I have no qualms about learning the local customs cuz hey when in Rome and all that. I'm actually looking forward to learning the language as I feel its opens up so many opportunities not only professionally but socially as well. Fortunately I don't do any drugs(not even alcohol :P) so I guess cops will not really bother me. This really calms my fears about going there and finding myself in chud central. Thanks once again for taking the time to reply.

No, they think Putin still wants to do that. I mean, the majority of the people here don't believe that nonsense, but if you're our equivalent of a blue check neolib, you will actually yell that at people who bully you on the internet for being an imperialist dork.

Funny how when Trump wanted to nuke the DPRK, congress and their helpers in the media were all like "well shit, there's nothing we can do stop him he's the commander in chief after all...".

Propose something that would significantly impair the imperial war machine's ability to project power? Oh yeah they'll find a way to stop that.

US EuroCom generals could just slow roll any troop movement/withdrawl for as long as it takes for the political winds to change back to "stay in Deutchland to protect the US from the nasty Ruskis!"

Ohh... man oh man... one of the first things you get to learn how to do REALLY well in the military is to drag your feet.

Unless Trump is going to stand behind whoever is in charge the entire time, I imagine that he's got very little power in this respect.

Totally cool with him trying though.

He can tell them to do something any if they don't do it he can put them up on charges.

He's the perfect sort of person to get this done because he'll just throw a tantrum about it.

Not sure charges would be his way, probably more like finding a replacement. But both of those things take time and he doesn't really have that much left.

If this were the ascendant Trump administration of a few years ago, I could see the tantrum having some kind of result (probably just enough change for him to tweet about but definitely not full withdraw). But I'm feeling like since he's "lame ducking it" nobody will risk their political career giving in to his tantrums.

Not really, he could fuck up a lot of careers.

The real impediment is that he doesn't really care.
