art doesn’t have to reinforce systemic hierarchies in the real world - doing so is a choice made by the artist. criticizing that choice is fair game. you’re giving the same “ahh, but you see, because of the lore…” defense people always use to defend shitty art. but real human beings made choices about what to depict in the art intended for consumption by other real human beings, who see the art and are informed by it.

what here says to you that the artist wants you to take away that this is bad? it's /just/ depiction. it's neither criticism nor endorsement. we live in a deeply transphobic society. that means that bare depiction operates as tacit endorsement - it merely reinforces the latent bigotry in society.

we've come full circle. settings don't arise whole cloth out of nothing. human beings choose the elements to include and those choices influence the people who consume the art. Bioshock is an example of a work that sets out to do political criticism. it's the exact opposite of 2077, which is using shitty depictions of trans people while offering no substantial criticism of that depiction.
and don't come back with cyberpunk is criticism of capitalism - that 1. has virtually nothing to do with the elements I'm pointing to as problematic and 2. cyberpunk is being used in this work to evoke an aesthetic, NOT to criticize capitalism, in the first place. this is liberal art intended for a mass liberal audience.
it's just lazy art and a cashgrab. it's okay to like problematic things but get the fuck out of my notifications telling me whether or not to feel grossed out by a dehumanizing depiction of my own god damned body. this shit is personal to me. death by a thousand paper cuts still leaves you dead.
