I was a big fan of them as a kid, and I remember very clearly what you're talking about. I remember feeling like the author had run out of ideas around the 8th book or whatever, because for multiple books they were trying to deal with one normal charlatan dude, which completely strained my belief cause there's no reason one regular dude should give these superhumans so much trouble.
