This is fucking insane. Of all the things in the new stimulus, this one is just nuts.

They basically are bailing out Hollywood I guess for suffering from the pandemic and bad economy. Now copyright laws are about to get even more insane.

This is the kind of shit we get with "tough on crime" Dems.

The latest win for Hollywood studios comes after California governor Gavin Newsom declared that those in the entertainment industry were essential workers and therefore exempt from the state's strict stay-at-home orders.

    :doomjak:

Fuck Hollywood. Something like 90% of what they make isn't even worth the risk.

‘It will end commercial piracy by criminal organisations and will not apply to internet users’ "The bill proposes criminal penalties for companies that willfully offer a digital remission service for "commercial of private financial gain", including fines and prison sentences."

nothing will fundamentally change. No pirate streaming service operates in the US anyway.

In totalitarian Nor... ah for fuck sakes, it's not even funny anymore. I fucking hate the fact countries like the USA, the UK and France are definitely waking up when it comes to the fact there could be a revolution, and are thus starting to implement fascistic reforms in order to protect their asses.

Revolutionary socialists would be in a much worse position right now if these governments had gone in a social-democratic or neo-Strasserite direction instead and actually delivered the goods to shut up their domestic workers like they did in the '40s and '50s. The bald-faced hubris on the part of the imperial core's ruling classes makes it easier for us to make the case for revolution.

It also makes it so that organizers are found dead in the US, or that my words are getting more and more likely to be monitored with every day passing. But I guess that you're right, westerners are slowly waking up from the illusion that they were something more than human resources for the capitalist meatgrinder.

LOL there isn't going to be a revolution here or in the UK. If the Brits couldn't do it during the Thatcher era, they never will. As for the US, the left is a counter-culture here with little to zero power at all. If it's even possible, we've got a long ways to go to building a movement. Fascism is far more likely. We're already several steps there.

Never say never, the youth in both Britain and the USA has seen its material conditions go to shit, and are thus in complete rupture over what used to be "acceptable" politics. But yea, I'm not saying fascism can't emerge victorious either, because that's indeed a really likely possibility with the current events slowly spiralling out of control.

This refers to people who like have streaming sites, most/all of which aren't based in the US anyway, not individual people streaming a movie, pretty sure
