I feel like I'm re-calibrating what a portion size is. At this point, if I'm still hungry I'll go and eat more. I feel like I want to instill a bunch of good habits before I start a calorie restricted diet. I'll replace fast carbs with slower, more fibrous ones, chicken thighs with chicken breast, eat more vegetables, etc. I believe that without these good habits, a diet is much more likely to go south because I'll be trying to fit in ice cream and fast food because it only has 300 calories. But I'm doing better, I'm staying hungry, and I'm feeling good about these dietary choices.
From your personal experience, what's your favorite technique to help you make healthier choices?

For me removing soda was huge, I switched to carbonated water (topo chico) citrus juice and stevia to taste for a Sprite replacement
Seriously, cutting out soda is the best single thing I've ever done for myself diet-wise
same, but for me it was diet soda. when i removed it from my diet i stopped craving sweets
I'm a carbonated water slut as well. Recently I got a cheapish carbonating thingamagic, and I'm finally managing to stay properly hydrated. It's awesome.
I haven't had a soft drink in like a year, not counting a can of coke I had at work like two months ago - it was absolutely disgusting
It's amazing once you palette changes it's hard to go back. I used to love dr pepper but i cant finish half a can now
I got one of those too and a 5 pound co2 tank to refill the expensive dinky ones they sell you for $30 a pop. Now I just gotta pay like $20 to exchange my 5 lb tank and I got enough co2 for a year

Whenever I try to snack first and wait I make sure it's with fruit, if in hungry 15 min late then I'll eat. Also in similar vein, have a glass of water or two and wait to see if you're hungry. Surprisingly your brain isn't to clear when you need water and sends generic 'I need sustenance' vibes and it's easy to interpret that as hunger. Also slowwwwwww down when you're eating, take 5 minutes between bites if you need, our brains don't process that we are satisfied immediately

I have a friend who really struggled with this and his solution was to constantly put his fork/food/etc away from him while chewing stuff. For him, having to reach over to have another bite deterred him and helped

I'm head over heels for this. Fuck the richest country on Earth for having people who need SNAP. That being said, I love the idea of putting simple ingredients together into a good meal. Everybody could stand to save $5 at the grocery store doing something like this. I daydream about the characters in books I've read traveling with the simplest rations and how it tastes to put the least amount of effort into foods as possible but still have them be edible.
Yes! It’s all fucking bullshit of course. I used this a lot ten or so years ago when I was dependent on food banks. I no longer am, but I still return to it every now and then for cheap and healthy and delicious recipes. The popcorn section is a must-read, it’s dirt cheap and an easy snack.
Yeah I have this too, it's great for a layperson who doesn't know how to cook, or even someone who wants easy cheap meals that you don't need to think about.

Most success stories I hear are from people who IF one way or another. I don't think it's for me - I abhor skipping breakfast. But I'm very happy to hear of your success! No matter how you gained the weight, (I hope) your life is a little richer for having gone up and back down again.

I usually just track my calories with myfitnesspal, but that's a chore. I like your approach, only scared that it might lead into snacking all the time.
In general I also try to plan my meals in advance and do not buy snacks. I'm really struggling to get my caloric intake under control, cause we're in lockdown and that means a lot less training and activity, and at the same time I crave carbs like crazy...

Last time I did MFP I got to almost 3 months. But I kept doing the same breakfast and lunch over and over and it go so tedious. I tried to adjust the calories and it all sort of fell through on me.
Thats my problem with MFP as well - you either have to eat the same/similar thing. Or it gets too tedous to measure everything every meal. I think I will try the intermitten fasting, and eyballing things. As well as the trick mentioned here....
I make a stack of celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins aka "Ants on a Log" and put them on a plate in the fridge before I smoke a giant bowl of pot. Then if I got the munchies, I've got something delicious and nutritious
Get a vitamix and replace breakfast and lunch with 40-60 ounce low cal smoothies. You'll be full. You'll lose weight.
I like this idea! A vitamix seems like a big commitment though. I think smoothies also make a FANTASTIC option for when you have a sweet tooth. You can fit so many healthy things into one of those bad boys.
Drinking water or chewing gum gets rid of or at least delays hunger too
I like to chew gum in between now and when the next meal is.
I remember seeing really fit people in my BJJ gym who would chew gum. I asked them about it and got that technique.
Smaller plates. Smaller portions. Smaller bites. Chew slowly and thoroughly.
