  • Have you tried Bioshock, Doom, or Wolfenstein? I think you could probably get all of them working on a terrible PC.

Bioshock 1 is about how libertarianism is bad, and Bioshock Infinite (3) is about how Christian theocracies are bad. There are some funky politics in 3 but it’s a fun game. The newest one came out over ten years ago so it should run ok.

Doom is about a guy who has to undo a bunch of corporate malfeasance by sending everyone back to Hell. One of the core mechanics is that you recover health and ammo by getting yourself into the action instead of hiding or waiting around. I think this one might be ok as well, at least the first one, because it runs pretty well on the Switch with all the graphics downgraded a bit.

Wolfenstein is about an alternate reality where the Nazis won and have lots of advanced tech. You have to kill Nazis. The story is really good.

Apologies if you’ve played these before but they’re all worth a shot if you haven’t.

  • I just read Heather Rodgers’ ‘Green Gone Wrong: Dispatches From the Front Lines of Eco-Capitalism’. A lot of these carbon capture companies charge out the ass for these projects, which they then outsource to India, where the local corruption means that these projects are rarely actually done. Additionally a lot of the trees they use to offset Gates’ private jet romps only live for ~50 years, which means that as soon as they die en masse in a few decades all that captured carbon gets released again.

Rodgers and her translator were told to basically get the fuck out of the towns where this happens or else they’d face consequences.

I suppose there are ways to check which companies actually fulfill these orders, but of course under capitalism etc…

  • “We Spaniards are an enlightened lot,” I say smugly as I walk through my dazzling city. “Our genocidio was much nicer than theirs.”

“Where did all the money come from to build this city, this grand crumbled empire, you ask? No fucking clue, I guess we just found it.”

    We continue walking.

“Did i benefit from the empire? Shucks no friend, I traced my family history back 500 years, all 150,000 ancestors living at that time, and found no one participated in the empire. They all lived out in the woods, and every descendant since then has also lived in the woods. We have never lived in a society.”

I see a stupid American look on your face.

“What are we going to do about it?” I make a confused puppy face in return. “They’re all dead anyway I guess so what’s the point? Let’s just move on.”

    We turn the corner.

“Apologize? No, the Zapatistas say that the capitalists shouldn’t apologize because what good would that do. So that means us leftists should do absolutely nothing,” I say, smugly.

Dumb Americans, I think, they really know nothing of history.

  • Kinda specific but sometimes when I start to bike (the first push-off) it feels like the chain ‘skips’ a beat and the pedals also ‘skip’ a beat. Is my chain too loose or something?

Also what are the best ways to keep your bike as theft-proof as possible in a city, that would be cool. I don’t even get nice bikes and they always get stolen with both a rear tire lock and a chain for the frame.
