where I live you literally can't find anything less than 1200 that is any kind of decent. Honestly even the $1200 places can be kinda ratty. Depending on where in the city an apartment is, a studio can be around 15-1800. Sub 1k is virtually non existent.

40k isn’t shit. That comes out to like 18$ an hour(I don’t feel like doing math so I’m guessing). Most professors would be lucky to get 2 classes and there’s no guarantee there will be one next semester. Plus competition for those jobs is fierce and they evaluate you on what you do outside of class. In short, you’re always hustling for very little pay. I honestly don’t know how people teach college

Not only is 40k fucking low, but do you know how much work goes into teaching a class? Grading takes a fucking eternity if you care even a little bit, and lesson planning isn't exactly easy. Also, if you work for a university, there is so much other crap you're expected to do! Like committees and departmental tutoring and shit. It's not good. Sure, it's not a minimum wage service job, I'd argue it's slightly less shit than that, but you also always bring your work home with you, because you care about your students, even when the school you're working for obviously doesn't.

Teaching university sucks, unless you're tenured, but nobody gets tenure nowadays. It's shit.

Yeah, my dad is a tenured professor at a state school in PA. He actually just retired prior to this current semester, but he taught there for 25 years and it was a really sweet gig. I honestly can't think of anyone who has genuinely loved their job as much as he did. But since the mid-00s, he hasn't really suggested going into university academia to many of his students, because it's just not the same job that it used to be. Being in school till you're 30 just to end up as an adjunct professor making $30k with no benefits or guarantee of work from year to year while your university builds stadiums and rec centers just isn't worth it.

You're good buddy, I just wanted to explain that being a university professor isn't all sunshine and roses. It used to be, yes, but nowadays, no one I know wants to go into teaching. It's extra stressful and doesn't pay for shit.
