Isn’t vanced just some hacky modification of the official youtube app for android? If you have to sideload just get the premium experience with Newpipe
No side loading necessary anymore, you can just download the microg mod and the manager and it works on an unrooted phone. Bonus is that it maintains your subscriptions and lets you log in as an anonymous user. I've had problems with being rate limited with new pipe before, I think Google limits the amount of videos that you can play through their API? Haven't had that issue with Vanced before.
The process you just described is the definition of sideloading. If you install it from anywhere but the Play Store (or Galaxy Apps I guess if you have a stock Samsung device), you’re sideloading.

I always thought side loading was done through the bootloader, I know the older version of Vanced required you to flash it through the bootloader. The newer one is just a standalone apk that doesn't require root.
Yeah, sideloading is anything outside of the official sanctioned software channels. microG, F-Droid, just downloading rando apks and installing them, flashing system apps via recovery; it’s all sideloading.
Older versions of Vanced probably required you to install them from the bootloader or recovery because they spoofed Google’s signature and Android would tell you to get fucked if you tried installing it normally.
Yeah that’s nuts, maybe I’ll give Vanced a try, the early stuff set off all my malware senses but they’ve been around a while now and seem to be getting more professional

Freetube is good for being able to browse your channels, disable recommendations and still watch videos through a proxy instead of downloading.
That said youtube-dl is still far more reliable than freetube/invidious and other options
