Exactly. He's basically a great character actor with a really energetic, physical talent who instead propelled himself to leading man stardom through sheer charisma (and being a Coppola probably helped too).

A lot of people get Cage all wrong. He isn't a bad actor. He just rejects realism and uses an exaggerated acting style.
I think it's a sign of a great actor if they can still perform well in a bad movie, shining through despite poor script and direction

Absolutely. Face/Off is great. Really well made, exactly as silly as it needs to be, great performances, great action. Probably the only American movie John Woo made that touches his Hong Kong stuff.
