This is a strong argument, but have you considered, making slightly sweetened cornbread then putting jelly on it anyway?
I'm a sugar hog, so I do what I can to curb my impulses. Also, jelly tastes better than "sweet" so I'd tend to go heavy on flavor and less on sweet.
