You can consider Vietnam a win for the US in some sense. The broader goal was not to just smash Communism in Vietnam (which was a failure) but to stop Communism from spreading in the region (a success for the US). It was confined to Vietnam and brutally, brutally kept out of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, etc.
Is there any reason to believe these other countries were ripe for communist revolution had the US not invervened in Vietnam? Feel like the French did a lot of the heavy lifting for the Vietnamese to become radicalized.
