I'm getting divorced and have a substantial disability pension. She's keeping the house and I'm basicly starting over. Right now I'm thinking about getting an RV an just living it traveling the country(US/Canada), my other thought is to move to central America or Puerto Rico (I'm half Puerto Rican but I've never been there) and enjoying the tropical life till the sea level rises enough to make them unihabitable.
So pitch me your ideas, what would you do if you had this degree of freedom?
Access to freshwater, ideally higher altitudes, far from the sea, farmable land, and most importantly low density and with a tight community you get to know and trust.
I feel like I should point out that Puerto Rico is currently enduring serious financial and humanitarian hardships, including lack of work, lack of housing, and lack of basic amenities in some areas. If you plan on looking for work, you'll have a hard time in PR. If not, maybe it will be alright for you, but it's not all sunshine and roses down there.
I understand shit is rough there. Fortunately I won't need a job and I hope putting money into the economy will help in what ever small way I can.
I'd say you've got the right attitude to give it a shot then. Especially since the cost of living is low, your money will go further there.
I lived there for a few years as a teenager, I love country more then any I've ever been to, but I can't see my self living there long term. Plus I don't have a degree so I doubt they would even give me anything other then a tourist visa.
Travel the states, run a trademark infringing Bunny Cop Funcky Pop empire out of your RV and meet all the leftists to find the one of us that isn't a fed.
Or something along those lines. I'm working my way towards a van so I can hopefully do some traveling like that once the rona apocalypse settles down. eventually. I lived out of a pick up truck and state forests for a few years and if you like quiet and can handle the minimalistish lifestyle, it's a pretty calming way to just be.
Fuck an rv. Get a diesel truck flat bed. Put a camper on it. Lift it a bit a/t tires. Go where your want
This & buy a few books on wildlife & rocks. Go to the southwest & just fucking camp somewhere for a while at a time. Cool enough in the summer to not suffer if you're on the Colorado Plateau, warm enough in winter to get to a town or be just fine if you get off the plateau.
If you do find neat fossils let a university or museum know though.
If you're going to go full off the map I'd switch a/t to m/t. Cooper stt pro or stt max have insane puncher resistant.
PR would be interesting I think. Particularly if they become a state
Montana is cool. Loved it there, there isn’t crazy amount of industry, but there plenty of land and lots of sun.
go to a European country where they have free and good healthcare if you can, Canada isn't bad either
Yeah I know I couldn't get into Canada atm , but the US has over 400 national parks so I should be good for a few years.
Hell no! Freezing my balls off under a dictatorship doesn't sound fun.
I’m in a similar boat, but I have a young child so I can’t go too far. In addition to Puerto Rico being easy because it’s part of US , lots of foreign countries are really easy to get permanent visas in if you have an income like your disability benefit. Check out these visas in central and South American countries if you speak Spanish. There are also similar things in Europe and Asia.
I think if you are already mulling the idea of moving to Puerto Rico, I think that would be a great reset. I have never been there myself, but I have thought about how much I would enjoy living on a subtropical/tropical island. It would be a change in lifestyle, but it sounds like maybe that is what you are looking for.
It sounds like it would be the fastest way to discover a new life. Enjoy what's left of the beauty in the world and well... find peace. A place by the sea to unwind sounds like a win to me.
RV'ing around the country is cool and you could make what ever you wanted of it, but you may want to consider CO2 emissions if you are doing a lot of driving.
There's plenty of cheap housing in Liberal, MO, my hometown. But I personally recommend Langley, Virginia. There's a metro nearby and lots of government jobs!
