I downloaded Tik Tok thinking I could curate my feed to be cool leftist short videos but instead it's even more of a disgusting hellworld than Twitter. Every leftist video I land on (the algorithm will also suggest fascist videos) is either an argument between leftists and nazis, an argument between leftists and libs, or (more commonly) leftists arguing with other leftists. I've learned nothing and my mood is ruined.
Short videos and tweet length comments are systemically reactionary. Embrace the immortal science of posterism.

ultra-short form content is inherently toxic. not just because it isn't long enough to communicate actually new ideas or develop narratives with any depth, but because it is, at best, distraction that fucks your brain's ability to calibrate attention and is the perfect length for dark pattern influence and data gathering.
it's annoying bc the left on there is generally posties and ancoms and they hate MLs more than just about anything, they're thoroughly indoctrinated

Yeah a lot of the left on there are either "fans of big red streamer man" or "I base my entire politics around a political compass and think auth=bad". I've certainly seen MLs shit on "ancoms" as well, but there's not a lot of MLs there.

The trick is that tik tok heavily favors videos you watch all of the way through and interact with when adding new ones to your feed and it can happen very quickly. If you scroll away immediately from three cat videos in a row you won’t see another cat video for like twenty minutes at least
I literally just opened tiktok, got a video of a fucking hyper dumbass praising Porfirio Diaz and spouting ahistorical garbage to the tune of FUCKING HAMILTON and I fucking closed this shit, I don't know I think tiktok is hot garbage and maybe it should legitimately be banned.
Just watch TikTok compilations on Youtube instead. Let someone else sort through the bullshit. I watch leftist ones and lesbian ones
Be selective about what you like/comment on. The algorithm is stupidly effective/accurate a lot of the time.

people post short videos and other people comment on them. If people who aren't white or aren't cis post videos, the comments are much, much different. The algorithm doesn't curate bigots away from those videos, since they specifically seek out this content.
e: you can also post a video response to a video, and a response to a response, etc. So it's not unusual to stumble on a video of somebody justifying why they should exist to a bunch of people hurling abuse at them
yeah, i use the app and i don't get it either. it generally curates your FYP really well so you shouldn't be looking at reactionary or bigoted content unless you engaged with it a lot or left a like or smth
yeah if you argue with people in the comments it counts as interaction.
