In 2020 reddit banned a donald trump subreddit. In an attempt to appear 'even-handed', they also banned the subreddit for the podcast Chapo Trap House. Hexbear started as a liferaft for that subreddit, briefly going by the name chapo.chat. Hence the name, /c/askchapo

It's all in the podcast, this community comes from /r/chapotraphouse which was the podcast's unofficial subreddit. The subreddit outgrew the podcast, got banned, and moved here.
