In 2020 reddit banned a donald trump subreddit. In an attempt to appear 'even-handed', they also banned the subreddit for the podcast Chapo Trap House. Hexbear started as a liferaft for that subreddit, briefly going by the name chapo.chat. Hence the name, /c/askchapo

El Chapo was not a socialist, and it took every ounce of willpower I have to not 'yes, and' that title

To be exhaustive, the subreddit was for the podcast Citations Needed, it was just called r/chapotraphouse for historical reasons.

How did this community spring from something Chapo-related? What does El Chapo have to do with socialism?

There's a popular leftist podcast called "Chapo Trap House". The name is just a joke they came up with in the first episode when thinking of a name for the podcast. El Chapo himself doesn't really have anything to do with socialism.

Did it have to do with El Chapo Guzman from the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico?

The name always kinda threw me off, honestly.

It's all in the podcast, this community comes from /r/chapotraphouse which was the podcast's unofficial subreddit. The subreddit outgrew the podcast, got banned, and moved here.

We were noticing a preponderance of short ("chapo" in Spanish) guys making effortposts and giving the most and promptest answers to questions, so we named it after them.

Tall folks already have enough glory; this was only fair to our short comrades.
