      giving an image of a random person to this AI facial recognition, asking it for analysis, and it spits out Leo DiCaprio's phrenology speech in Django Unchained

      god I hate these dorks. it's just even worse astrology

    You don't need a LLM to look at my face and know I'm gay, babes.

    You need eyes.

    The photos in the first article are self selected from Facebook and not just a plain, consistent forward facing picture. For all anyone knows that AI was selecting based on lighting or photo quality or facial expressions or simply what each participant tended to pick as their picture, likely not anything to do with the actual face at all. And he says “accurately” but it’s only 72% accurate with a training corpus of over a million data entries.

    I didn’t bother to check the other two articles.

      After $250,000,000 of seed funding and thousands of hours of training, our algorithm is able to accurately classify this picture of me sucking dick while burning down a police station 3 out 5 times (under optimal conditions)! soypoint-1 soypoint-2

        me sucking dick while burning down a police station

        Why would you want to do this under suboptimal conditions though? You need it to be just right to be as enjoyable as possible

    leftoids

    I'm curious how they determined an AI """accurately""" labeled a face was gay or crime, this claim sounds 6 telephone calls away from whatever the source material is.

      The APA PsycNet article says:—

      Facial features employed by the classifier included both fixed (e.g., nose shape) and transient facial features (e.g., grooming style). Consistent with the prenatal hormone theory of sexual orientation, gay men and women tended to have gender-atypical facial morphology, expression, and grooming styles.

      The first article, in Nature, while claiming better-than-human ability at identifying the conservative/liberal in a pair of photos, goes on to undercut the phrenological conclusions the poster undoubtedly wants to make.

      Predictability of political orientation from facial images does not necessarily imply that liberals and conservatives have innately different faces.

      But the Wired article is the most 'fun', since it takes the time to point out the obvious criticism, that:—

      […] it is impossible to predict criminality without racial bias, “because the category of ‘criminality’ itself is racially biased.”

      and also mentions the source of the crime-prediction claim:—

      “Crime is one of the most prominent issues in modern society,” said Jonathan W. Korn, a PhD student at Harrisburg and former New York police officer, in a quote from the deleted press release.

      Relevant percentage: 40.

    would not be surprised if a non-negligible percentage of these "predictions" are just

    gay = piercings

    criminal = melanin

    I remember seeing a guy online ask if he had a 'gay face'. Arguably he did, but only because gay and bi men take better care of their facial hair than the straights, in my experience.

    Lock every tech nerd inside their silicon valley office buildings and burn them all down.

    This "AI" bullshit needs to stop.
