My city is about to purchase a hotel and convert it into permanent supportive housing for the homeless, with police money for operating costs. This is one of the best things to happen in this hellscape of a city.
Enter the NIMBYs
Mackenzie Kelly , a ghoul who posed with Proud Boys during her city council campaign, asked for a week of deliberation to "educate her constituents about the hotel purchase."
Instead, she organized protests against it. 200 NIMBYs, with food and refreshments.
In coalition with Freda's Seafood (a restaurant nearby), GOP operative Matt Mackowiak , and the Austin Police Association are trying to stop this hotel purchase and also effectively criminalize homelessness in the city.
What can you do?
The deadline for this purchase is Thursday.
I've linked a few twitter accounts. More can be found on facebook or Twitter with simple research. We need a social media push on this.
Solidarity with the victims of capitalism, and cyberbullying against those who would hurt their fellow human beings like this.
I know y'all aren't my personal posting army, but the folks here have helped out with amazing things before, and it would mean so much to me and to the people living on the streets in Austin Texas. Thank you.
P.S. here's the org trying to recriminalize homelessness, Save Austin Now
I know y’all aren’t my personal posting army
For something like this, we are. Fuck NIMBYs
a home is a human need, yes?
the homeless do not have homes
therefore the homeless are not human.
IF THEY WERE HUMAN THEY'DE HAVE HOMES fucking dumbshit commie.
They think the homeless are farm animals or some shit, which is funny because really it's the police who are all pigs :curious-marx:
People harassing that Freda's Seafood actually already spilled over onto my Facebook timeline. You can bet I'm doing my part o7
I'm new to twitter. Can I get banned for saying "fuck you" to a city councilperson?
Edit: About to find out.
I don't love YIMBYs but absolutely FUCK NIMBY's
edit: It's been a while can someone refresh me on what's wrong with YIMBY's again? I remember there was something but idk what
YIMBYs are alright, just tend to be pretty in line with capitalism, but it's such abroad term that out kinda encompasses everyone from libertarians not wanting zoning laws to communist groups fighting for public housing.
Yeah there is a huge difference between "yes, put the giant petrochemical plant across the street from the elementary school" and "yes, I'm okay with poor people being visible from my neighborhood".
What ostensible reason do the police have to be against this? Man, fuck them.
I forgot to mention that the money for the operating costs are coming from money we slashed from the police budget, which is amazing. Edited the post to reflect that.
Regardless, they're pissed.
That makes a little more sense, but it also makes the bill even more awesome.
they're just fucking pigs dude don't even have to come up with an excuse they've got the governor on their side
I moved back but can't do anything because pandemic. Sucks shit. I feel the same. I love that the council actually cut some from the police budget (small amount sadly) and is at least trying to house homeless with them. Sadly we have Greg Abbott in charge of us.
Her victory was an upset tbh. She is from a richer district very mad out the police budget cut.
with the criminalization on the ballot the hotel is some really good news. some people in Austin are just really dedicated to making homeless peoples' lives hell
