Remember, we're taking about a country that was brutally looted at gunpoint under a century of colonialism until as recently as the 50s, and has had to build an entire nation from scratch with a population that was over 90% agrarian and still working the land with hand tools when the communist party came to power.

They've made miraculous progress in an incredibly short amount of time, and they didn't have the benefit of a colonial empire to siphon labor and resources from like all of the European powers did.

I recall reading that despite having universal housing, the USSR still had problems of homelessness.

Housing was awfull for much of the USSR for much of it's history. It was one of the mayor complaints of the population. Good housing was equal to a family having their own room, with a kitchen and bathroom for the entire floor... In WW2 when they evacuated the factories and the workers and their families east, do you thing they had housing for these millions of refugees?

Not trying to argue, just trying to learn more about something I don't have experience with.

Obviously this is a bad situation, and shows that there should be more housing available in the cities and/or more jobs available in the country, but isn't this significantly different than being homeless in other countries? If the homeless people have the option of moving out to the countryside, doesn't that at least put a lower limit on their living conditions and ability to get needed services? In other countries, if the situation for homeless people worsens due to police crackdowns, austerity, etc. they're just screwed. I'm sure there could be problems with the living situation in the country, but doesn't the fact that people are making a choice show that they are at least able to get by?
