TIL that there was no economic growth in the country that went from wooden ploughs and illiteracy to exploring outer space within a generation.

GDP is so meaningless and elusive.

You have two households that do a standard amount of cooking, cleaning, home maintenance, ect -> no GDP generated.

Each household pays someone from the other household $100/day to come over and do the same cooking, cleaning, and maintenance -> $200K of GDP magically appears out of thin air.

I'm sure the NYT will be happy to sell the justifications for the repression of those people too.

They won't say that they deserve to be repressed, but they will come out and say that they shouldn't complain, as that just makes the opressor repress them harder. And if you're not part of the repressed group, you shouldn't be trying to help them, because that would also make the repress them harder.

Just gotta wait for the opressor to stop opressing by themselves.

That's the scariest part about fascism. It's a death cult that murders everyone eventually.

Reminder that chile during pinochet was in constant economic crisis, it only recovered during his final years in power and that the “solid economic growth” happened mostly with the return of democracy.

They're saying Putin is a necessary deterrent to the horrors of Extremist Leftism and they'll continue to do business with him while wagging their fingers and being very sad that he's in power.

Saying this pea-brained shit while describing a country that communism literally transformed from a feudal backwater into a world superpower and central rival of the United States for the better part of the 20th century.

None of the fascist countries ever had a space program that put America in an equal competition.

Excluding the one Spanish fascist astronaut of couse.

In fairness, the United States cribbed a big chunk of its space program from the German Fascists. Also in fairness, the US and the USSR were just about the only countries post-WW2 with any real space technology to speak of. In the modern era, we're seeing space industry pop up in China, Japan, India, and the EU. The latter two are definitely Fash-adjacent if not explicitly Fascist.

With space technology increasingly corporatized, we could very possibly see the big petro-states or wealthy plutocrats in countries like Brazil, Australia, and Nigeria develop domestic space programs. The Equator is the cheapest point to launch a rocket, and Africa has some of the highest altitude territory on the equatorial line. So it's not inconceivable that we'll see a space boom in Kenya or Tanzania in our lifetimes.

Imagine Nicolas Kristof being dragged to a nice little Siberian GULag screaming "THIS IS FASCIIIIISCM!" at the top of his lungs.

You, the guard, just take a drag from your cigarette, smile cooly and reply "Oh no, comrade columnist dude, not at all. This is just socialism!"

This shuts him up, possibly forever.

When I worked security at Liberal Mountain Concert Venue^TM, that would happen with some regularity when we had to kick people out for things like fighting and SA. Just flailing and screaming about how this is bullshit, they didn't do anything, who the fuck are we to etc etc. Maybe 1 out of 5 would take the L and walk to the door with us, but most had to be dragged out, drunkenly protesting their innocence while some poor partygoer bled from the nose 10 feet away. I guess the point of this comment is that the worst people will tell themselves they did nothing wrong until the very end, and also that I would like to be a gulag guard.

no economic growth under communism. it happens time and time again. a country goes commie, and then does a no growth. that's why the ussr wasn't a super power and why china isn't a super power. because of communism.
