The Arauco War was a long-running conflict between colonial Spaniards and the Mapuche people, mostly fought in the Araucanía. The conflict begun at first as a reaction to the Spanish conquerors attempting to establish cities and force Mapuches into servitude. It subsequently evolved over time into phases comprising drawn-out sieges, slave-hunting expeditions, pillaging raids, punitive expeditions, and renewed Spanish attempts to secure lost territories.

After many initial Spanish successes in penetrating Mapuche territory, the Battle of Curalaba in 1598 and the following destruction of the Seven Cities marked a turning point in the war leading to the establishment of a clear frontier between the Spanish domains and the land of the independent Mapuche. From the 17th to the late 18th century a series of parliaments were held between royal governors and Mapuche lonkos and the war devolved to sporadic pillaging carried out by both sides.

In the words of Philip II, this conflict cost the largest number of Spanish lives in the New World, which is why it became known as the Flandes indiano ("Indian Flanders"), in reference to the Eighty Years' War.

There's a huge fucking thread on r/neoliberal right now about how they are being too forgiving of racists, both in the sub and in congress. Talking about silencing BIPOC voices and excusing racism when it comes from someone they'd otherwise support. All well and good, and probably things that community should have been working on.

Here's the kicker though: the impetus for this thread was Joe Manchin refusing to vote to confirm Neera Tanden. :michael-laugh: :michael-laugh:

It's weird when you watch the final fight in Avengers Endgame and realize that without the infinity stones, Thanos is literally just a big purple guy. Like, that's it. There's nothing else to him, he's just big and purple and kind of strong.

There's so many posts in here that no one will notice my hot take:

Missionaries are inherently imperialist. No I will not explain. :horsepoo-theory:

        based Kwame Ture

the first act the missionaries did when they got to Africa was to make us cover up our bodies, because they said it got them excited

and oppress LGBT people, because when you're a soulless death cultist fascist, normal human behavior is "sinful" and "evil"

Hello just sharing some personal nonsense

I finally logged off a couple of weeks ago and started organizing with my union, mostly textbanking and agitating about our strike vote. I felt super green and inexperienced and had some anxiety about performing badly among the more experienced comrades, whatever that even means. Anyway, fast forward to this morning, I got a message from a committee member saying I had the highest signature success rate they had ever seen!! Had to do a double take, I didn't even spend that much of my time??

I'm feeling so fucking good about myself right now and I had to share with you all. Organizing fucking works!! Solidarity :Care-Comrade:

Bike spun out on some black ice, landed on my shoulder (not dislocated though!) and tore a hole in my favorite work appropriate pants. This is why we wear helmets.

This is the first time I've been back on this site in a month.

I left because I was too online, getting brain poisoning, and just feeling worse about myself for every other post seeming to call me a bad communist (self-projecting, a personal issue more than a site issue I think/hope).

I thought I was doing well. Detoxing a bit. Grill pilled, if you will.

And then tonight. I got into a political shouting match with a good friend (who I've done this with in the past. It will blow over) because no matter what, I can't seem to stop myself from turning into the "gets political after 3 beers" meme and can't talk politics without feeling like I'm coming across like a stark-raving lunatic.

"Terminally online" really is terminal, isn't it?

Not sure if I'm back for good, but I had to put this somewhere.

Just heard my Chinese neighbor speaking almost perfect Spanish.

Now we have a common language and I can finally ask him for gardening tips and get to know him. Hell yeah!!!
