I can't drink regular starbucks coffee without doing it. They over roast the shit out of those beans and it's always so bitter. Even their medium roasts are a bit much for me.

Never tried table salt, I usually just used something alkaline like milk or a teeny tiny bit of baking soda (which is a type of salt, I think)
Milk works to cut bitterness because the milk fat bonds with the tannins. I don't know what the salt does.
I always though it was because milk was more alkali and the bitter tasting stuff in coffee was acidic.
