I can't drink regular starbucks coffee without doing it. They over roast the shit out of those beans and it's always so bitter. Even their medium roasts are a bit much for me.

You only need a pinch, like 4-5 grains to do the job.

Alternative POV: bitter tastes good. Life's bitter, coffee's bitter. There's harmony in all things.

tbh I don't mind bitter most of the time, I drink bitter beers pretty often. However, I've been drinking this garbage for too long since I got a bunch on sale and I'm a frugal bastard. Once it runs out though I'm finding something else. Someone else suggested something in the thread and it has a good price.

Ironically, I can't tolerate bitter/hoppy beers - something about bitterness being combined with carbonation.

I don't know wtf Starbucks does, because I have a bag of this roast, which is just comically dark, literally jet black, and it's super tasty (in espresso, at least. probably only in espresso).

I've got a lever espresso machine and a temperature-controlled kettle set at 88 C to brew this, and I really wouldn't suggest putting it in a drip machine. They aren't kidding when they say "dark," and it would be undrinkable brewed at 100 C. French press, pour-over, or aeropress would work, but I haven't tried. Its kind of overpowering in a latte, even.

Makes a tasty shot, though. (Said by someone who likes peated whisky.)

Nice, good looking out. I use both a French press or pour over. Usually French press. It can't be worse than this shit I'm drinking, and I'll likely have to use less per cup anyways.

pro life hack tip 420: go to independent 3rd wave coffee shops, they are the same price but the quality is out of this world, order a cortado with oat milk, drink it knowing you drank milk from an Oat Cow, and coffee from slightly less slave like conditions (its actually direct trade with farmers) and that way you arent contributing to the absolute worst business practices a multinational relies on, or the cruelty to animals

Good stuff, yeah, I really haven't sought out more than a couple of independent places tbh. Coffee is just a vessel for me to get caffeine when I need it. But I just looked up two different cafes that are sorta near me, I'll give 'em a shot to see what they sell for beans. tbh I really never gave it that much thought. I mean I know how fucked up the coffee bean industry is, but I also have to stay pretty frugal with my purchases for the most part. If they end up only being a few dollars more I'll check it out. Good lookin out.

I just looked up one of the most popular places near me that isn't starbucks and found out they supported actual nazis lol

he family behind Peet’s parent company JAB Holding had been staunch supporters of the Third Reich, and in fact had built their fortune via Nazi Germany’s large-scale forced-labor system. Honcho Albert Reimann Sr. was a card-carrying Nazi who made donations to the SS, Hitler’s paramilitary force, in the early 1930s. In 1937, according to the New York Times, Albert Reimann Jr. wrote a letter to Heinrich Himmler: “We are a purely Aryan family business that is over 100 years old,” it read. “The owners are unconditional followers of the race theory.”

yeah it's for sure a combination. Starbucks overroasts their coffee to add their own distinct flavor that will be the same all around the world, which is what they are going for. Plus they can roast more beans at one time faster doing it at such a high heat instead of the more traditional slowe roasting. I'm no expert on coffee but I've read they also do this because it's harder to tell the difference for good quality beans and bad when you overroast it like that, which makes sense to me. There is a handful of reasons they do this, really. But when I make coffee at home it's usually pretty strong. If I can afford the good stuff though I usually put less in than the starbucks shit because the taste is better that way. This cheap shit I buy I just drink it for the caffeine, the flavor is gonna be garbage no matter what with this brand but it's ridiculously cheaper here for some reason than everything else.

also! the way starbucks keeps their coffee heated seems way hotter than everywhere else besides like McDonalds, which definitely adds bitterness to the coffee. If I ever actually have to go into a starbucks, I just buy a double or triple shot, put 1 packet of sugar in it and slam it. It tastes like shit but it's super cheap and easy to just get it over with

I remember a couple years back when keto bullshit was bigger they had this crazy ass marked up coffee that would have butter in it to boost your brain or some shit, but a little bit of ghee is a nice weekend treat in coffee

Keto truly was one of the wildest fads. People just drinking raw eggs and butter in their coffee and pretending it tastes good. I don't follow health news much but I read some stuff about the diet potentially being really hard on the heart and something else. That diet has never interested me in the slightest. I'd rather just do two medium sized meals a day personally.

I might just start doing this. Even their blonde roast is bitter as fuck, just that it tastes watered down.

yeah start out small is my advice. If you overdo it, you will ruin an already bad coffee and that might make it undrinkable. You can always add a couple grains more if you feel like it's still too bitter.

Never tried table salt, I usually just used something alkaline like milk or a teeny tiny bit of baking soda (which is a type of salt, I think)

Milk works to cut bitterness because the milk fat bonds with the tannins. I don't know what the salt does.

I always though it was because milk was more alkali and the bitter tasting stuff in coffee was acidic.

        Today I learned...

Been doing this for years. Long time ago I heard it referred to as "Navy Coffee" so I just call it Navy Coffee.
