It is quite comical how long the Academy has cockblocked him, despite his legendary status to peers and fans alike. His first and only Oscar was for The Departed which was arguably his weakest crime film.
Honestly those kind of antics are why I stopped caring about the Oscars entirely. I'm happy when someone whose work I enjoyed gets one, because hey that's some nice resume padding for whoever cares about those little golden men, but I no longer believe it actually confers anything about the quality involved.
