I think that the people that founded it were also dumb tech bros. Don't underestimate the bubble silicon valley puts itself in.
I think that at the point that Jeff Dunn came in it was a grift though.
They designed it so that it could only work after scanning a QR code that they put on their packages, which forced you to buy the fruits via their subscription service. 100% a scam.
I'm ethically obliged to link to the brilliant Dollop episode about this. Someone asked if it's a scam- the way the Dollop frames it is that premiums and exclusivity are the product, fruit juice the after product.
TLDR: Get one or two investors to back you and you can surf your way to grift town USA
