As much as I dislike debatebros, some things like bringing up "whataboutism" should just be read as "waahhh how dare you point out my hypocrisy"! That and accusing people of being bots is just such a copout in an argument and makes me instantly disrespect you more.

I mean he's right in this case, but the part about the Soviets inventing whataboutism is absurd and then gg thinking that he owned them with that take is another layer of absurd

I don't know what comment he's responding to but I just see whataboutism as every counterargument after anyone tries to bring up some entity being hypocritical at that moment. And in cases like the US just getting done funding and spreading terror worldwide, for example, then calling for a war on terror - sorry but that hypocrisy becomes relevant to any conversation about US leading a war on terror from then on out!

          Yeah, a common example:

Libs - China is doing a genocide

Left - Debatable, but US doing many genocides (and kids in cages)

          Libs - Whataboutism!

Right, and they'll try to be all egalitarian about it and say both countries should be investigated. In reality we all know how that will go: neither countries will actually investigate the other, US will try funding a separatist movement in Xinjiang or do whatever with the CIA, kids in cages will go in the memory hole.

Yeah, I always heard the history that it wasn't a 'tactic', it was a label that America/Britain would use when their hypocrisy was called out constantly when doing moral grandstanding.

Either way, 'whataboutism' is right up there with 'gaslighting' on the list of words Americans have been misusing since around 2015 or so.

The 'teaching libs words' meme is evergreen.
