plus it fits nicely with the bit that we all are working on a troll farm in russia!
it is a bit right?
What a strange sense of humour you harbour. I hope you realise that there are absolutely no foreign agitators here.
as cool as it would be .su is almost universally associated with malware and would almost certainly cause the site issues with blacklisting etc and lots of antiviruses would block us automatically
Plus it is administered by the Russian Institute for Public Networks so Russia controls it lol, which makes it neat and maybe less messed with by the feds or whatever (i.e. they might not be able to 'take it away' from you, it could still be blocked from being resolved).
I am reminded of some... people I knew who used to route through Russia because Russia likes nothing better than telling the US State Department to fuck off. Allegedly. So the story goes.
Please can the mods buy that domain and at least use the domain redirect as a gag? Maybe it can redirect to a specific community.
Thankfully they also managed to stick the ☭ symbol into unicode in 1993.
One issue is that during its early years it was a completely unregulated haven for what became the seedier parts of the darkweb, which means in some countries .su suffixes are blanket-blocked by ISPs. Additionally that history may have SEO implications, though I've not seen any data on .su specifically I know some country codes are privileged over others.
there's also .kp for the DPRK, but that one is often outright blocked or mishandled by search engines
.dd was also assigned to the GDR but never got added to the nameservers
