Came here to post this, and how surprising it is that most of the top-most comments are calling this out as propaganda. This includes a few posts that are essentially "lol Zenz," which is doubly encouraging because this is getting well enough known that you don't need a carefully-worded, 30-link comment to not get downvoted to hell.
I can't remember exactly what the situation was, but basically Kony wasn't really a problem anymore and this provided support for deployment of US troops to Uganda/DRC.
They didn't want another Sankara I'm guessing. There had been internal discussions about sending troops since 2010, but Kony gave them the political capital to do it without backlash.
