New York has the largest Tibetan population in the Western world and it's also a fact that Tibetans are materially oppressed in China, with the Tibetan Autonomous Region not only having the lowest HDI but also the lowest life expectancy of any region of China
I would expect some minority groups face discrimination in China, like I'm not a fan of what China is doing with the Ughyrs (referring to what the Chinese government is claiming to do, not what western countries claim to be clear). Despite that, it doesn't justify US reps from supporting movements that would further US imperialism in the global south. Just like how the Hmong people have faced discrimination in Vietnam but leftists shouldn't support American gov backed independence movements in central Vietnam. It's more useful for western leftists to focus on building better conditions here than pointing out flaws in countries that oppose American imperialism.
maybe it's the least developed region because it's on really harsh terrain, sparsely populated, far away from the Chinese coast and it being pretty much a feudal economy when the PRC was formed? especially since the bottom 5 administrative divisions in the HDI are in the surrounding area? no, the more likely explanation is that the Communist Party of China is doing ethnic discrimination/cleansing :agony:

Assuming this is correct, it's not by itself evidence of oppression. It might just mean that part of the country is poor, and there may be causes of that poverty that don't amount to some sort of intentional harm. Nebraska is poorer than some U.S. states, but that by itself doesn't mean the people of Nebraska are oppressed.
