If the litterbox is up against a wall try putting it so the entrance is facing that wall, but with enough room for your cats to comfortably get in/out. This only works if there is an entrance, so covered trays (door optional). Roommates cat has a tendency to zoom out of the box, spreading the gravel. There being a wall acts as a sort of speed bump, and any escaping gravel will stay near the box (hopefully)

Is your cat elderly, or do they have long fur? They might not be able to clean their paws all the way off. If they have lots of paw-fluff you could try trimming it if kitty will allow you to.

Other than that it sounds like you're doing what you can. I've seen these special rugs for sale that are supposed to help catch litter. They look like a rubber, blown up version of velcro loops woven together, but im not sure how well they work.

And cleaning bots do well on hard floors, but aren't really worth a damn on carpet/rugs.

Yeah, that should be fine for spot cleaning & litter pick-up. You'll have to sweep occasionally and get the corners manually. The pricey ones aren't much better, a bit smarter and slighty more succ power maybe, but more than a few hundred and you're paying for branding rather than function.

OK so I promise I'm not a hail corporate shill, but look into the Purina Tidy Cat litter box system. It's amazing. It uses dehydrating pellets and a pee pad, so the pee soaks through to the pad (replaced weekly) and the pellets dehydrate the poop until you scoop it out. The pellets are big, so even if your cat literally throws them around (which they probably won't, they're kind of heavy) it's very easy to clean up. I cannot emphasize how much cleaner and easier this is than using a normal litter box. Highly recommend you looking into it.

I sawed holes into a cheap two-door cabinet (with a median wall) to create both a "room" for the litter box and a "room" for the cat to walk through (and drop litter from her paws). I set this up 5 years ago and it's just made my life better across the board.

I'm happy to get more into the specifics, but the cat has to cross an antechamber (the first section of the cabinet) before she gets to the section with the litter box itself. The litter she kicks up when burying is kept in by the door of the cabinet, and I put a grooved plastic mate in the antechamber to catch remaining litter on her paws (which is also very easy to clean). She has to cross a carpet to get to the entry, and that picks up everything else. Then you just open the door to clean the box and sweep.

Seriously, it's a win-win-win solution if you can afford it/have space for it, because it 1) hugely reduces litter 2) hides a very unsightly thing 3) cuts down on smell.

Mine kept shitting off the side of the tray so I put the tray in a box but the lid was too low so I put another box on top upside down and the put the lid as a doormat into the litter-tray-box-cave and that mostly works but I still need to dust/sweep the area every time I do the litter.

Roombas are good. Repairable too with parts easily available online. Get the cheapest model. 614 I think.
