While I’m generally skeptical of boycotts, BDS scares the shit out of Israel. Because I do believe if BDS becomes a global movement it really could change things. I’ll start with the list from bdsmovement.net and then add to the list as people list other companies to boycott in the comments:
Hewlett-Packard (computer hardware)
Siemens (tech conglomerate)
AXA (banking & insurance)
Puma (clothing)
Israeli fruits and vegetables (usually labeled)
SodaStream (idk that garbage home soda)
Ahava (cosmetics)
Sabra (hummus)
pretty obscure but CompuLabs, a manufacturer of industrial/embedded PCs and modules. (One of which is in the Perseverance mars rover...)
They're based in Yokneam, IL. Per wikipedia:
Yokneam was built on the lands of a Palestinian Arab village named Qira, depopulated in the lead up to the 1948 Arab–Israeli war.
I guess the village just did that. On its own.
IL
That’s it! Relocate the Israeli settlers to Illinois. They can even have the same address (abbreviation for Illinois is IL) but with a USA at the end. /s
bds movement
let us join the BDSM, together we will use BDSM to destroy Israel
What about those boycott lists with tens of products?
The global nature of today’s economy means that there are thousands of companies that have links to Israel and are complicit to various degrees in Israel’s violations of international law. However, for our movement to have real impact we need our consumer boycotts to be easy to explain, have wide appeal and the potential for success. That’s why globally, while we call for divestment from all companies implicated in Israel's human rights violations, we focus our boycott campaigns on a select few strategic targets. We also encourage the principle of context sensitivity, whereby activists in any given context decide what best to target and how, in line with BDS guidelines. There is a lot of information online claiming that some large companies give money to Israel, some of which turns out to be false. BDS has built a reputation for strictly adhering to established facts and producing the most accurate information.

i dont have much (or anything?) from these corps but I think boycott part of BDS is pretty difficult to achieve at a large scale. For example, Intel makes (some) of its chips in Israel (not in West Bank though).
I think sanctions are the best way to hurt Israel. Capitalists don't care much about ethics of investment. The state has to force them to stop.
has any group of people made change "with their wallets"? im willing to bet almost never.
The boycott is really more about building awareness, as libs understand boycotts as a political tool and it's an excuse to table and talk to them.
Projecting that we do care about it is important for achieving that.
Yeah society at large can't really boycott these monopolies/duopolies effectively, better to focus on a smaller number of worse cases that are also easier to damage, as BDS has been doing.
Also, I saw in the comments in the news mega that a huge amount of Israel’s exports are in tourism and diamonds. Not like anyone here is planning trips to Israel, but you shouldn’t buy diamonds anyway.
Wait do they have diamond mines or are most of the lab grown diamonds coming from there?
I think they do a lot of cutting and polishing, i.e. they import raw stones and manufacture them into diamonds.

Or make it yourself. Ridiculously easy and tastes way better. I recommend trying it with serrano pepper and garlic.
Wow, that's something I never considered. Going to have to try it myself. Did you make it more sweet or savory?
Much sweeter. The recipe called for one orange sweet potato. IIRC I peeled, cubed and then roasted the potato first. I also boiled thr chickpeas with a little baking soda because apparently that softens them, too, and the potato would mask any bitterness. It's a couple extra steps but it came out well.
I'm definitely going to put some serrano in mine next time. Thanks for the recommendation!
I prefer it over jalapenos because I don't like the taste of jalapenos. Similar spiciness, better taste. Hope you enjoy it!
I have never had a tub of aldi hummus I've enjoyed. What flavor do you usually get? Maybe that's my problem
Ok, well, I may have to try that one! I've tried garlic and one other one, maybe plain? Both bad, but I'm down to try one more kind of aldi hummus! Thanks!
To the shootas out there, do not buy UpLula/MagLula speed loaders. They're sold by an Israeli company. If you look hard enough on AliBaba/AliExpress, you'll find some Chinese sellers disguising a UpLula counterfeit as other products for a cheaper price
I think the Puma boycott is not because their stuff is made there, but because they sponsor some of their soccer/football teams.
Bit niche but Palram, most of the greenhouse and outdoor DIY kits available here are made by them
Yeah mcdonalds, starbucks, and disney seem to be by far the most mentioned companies people say to boycott on social media. Starbucks is now doing a buy one get one free thing (something they'd probably never do otherwise), mcdonalds is giving free fries, and disney + is having a special in app game thing. A lot of people are saying those are a reaction to calls for boycott?
that's just entrail reading. i'm not saying a boycott can't do anything, but these promotions aren't really unusual, they were almost certainly planned in advance, and these are enormous corporations that won't respond to criticisms until after it starts effecting their bottom line, which i don't believe it has yet.
Woolworth's. Overpriced as fuck grocery store chain in South Africa that's been pretty open about supporting Pissnotreal. Also everything costs like four times as much. There's literally zero reason to step in one, except to steal/loot or burn it down.
Also the former Isn'treali ambassador to South Africa, Arthur Lenk was endorsing Woolies on Facebook around 2014-15, legit "buy these overpriced as fuck cherries in a small-arse cup for R60 ZAR because they're made in genocidal-apartheid-ethnostate".
Could this also be a thread for alternatives?
For example, I picked up a thrift store sodastream a while back because it's seemingly almost the only working brand that just makes fizzy water fast, and certainly the only one with enough market penetration to be ending up in thrift stores. (I actually had a whole setup with a keg and a CO2 tank before but it sucked to use and the water wasn't that fizzy.)
I haven't been able to use it since it ran out of gas, because I refuse to buy a replacement canister from sodastream. Any knockoffs available? I remember not being able to find any. If I had like 4 of the canisters I'd just refill them myself using dry ice but its a pain to buy pelletized dry ice in that small of quantity to do just 1.
For the soda stream one good trick is to buy the machine (which they sell as a loss leader), and buy a 5lbs CO2 tank from a beer supply store for which you can find adapters on AliExpress or eBay!
https://www.indigosoda.ca/en/ is another alternative, made in Quebec, Canada. It's also fully SodaStream compatible trololo.jpg
If your carbonation didn't work well in a keg, it's probably because your liquid isn't cold enough.
wish I didnt lose the co2 tank I think this is the move yeah.
Yeah I use a 5lb tank to refill the sodastream canister, probably costs me around $5 per refill (compared to the $23 they charge). Saving money and boycotting an evil company feels good.
YES! Alternatives are so helpful to push a boycott.
I remember when the frito-lay/coke workers struck and asked for a consumer boycott, I made this flier for people to print out. Most leftist places online were like oh cool awesome thanks. A couple of Reddit Leftist™ subs were like what the fuck? this is consumerism! These foods are unhealthy! Why would I TELL someone to drink pepsi
like lmao, you're not convincing someone at the store to skip the chips they came to buy, and go buy some fucking corn flour and oil, or a fucking cucumber come on
I cannot comprehend that you moved FROM the keg setup to a soda stream. Do you still have the keg/CO2 tank? You can get soda bottle adapters that will let you do a smaller quantity. You should be able to make 2L in under a minute if you shake violently.
You also can get bulk tank adapter hoses for the sodastream, if you really like that format.
Edit: I was being rude and it was uncalled for
lost the co2 tank in a move somehow. really dont know where it went, I was befuddled
the rest of it I eventually got rid of. even with the water chilled (which is pretty inconvenient compared to instant carbonation at any temp) I couldn't get strong carbonation even after shaking the thing for several mins which was a chore because it was a 1.75 gal mini keg. and nothing seemed to make it much better, lower temp or higher pressure or leaving it sit pressurized. Sodastream just worked, didnt require shaking or prechilling. If I hadnt lost the tank I would have eventually tried a different setup with a soapstone or whatever its called
no worries on the rudeness.
I'm suuuuuuper late to the party (is necrobumping a thing here? If so sorry!) but one tip for this setup is to not fill the bottles all the way. If you have a bit more headspace in the bottle, it's more effective to shake it and more CO2 dissolves in my experience.
Beyond that, having a high enough pressure for the part going into the bottle is important. I normally use 45 psi or so and that gets me the right kind of prickly water for my tastebuds.
I know you said you don't have it anymore, but just in case you wanna try again at any point in the future or just for people reading this, figured this might be useful.
I dont think necroposting is really a thing people care about here, no
idk what the issue was with my setup. water not cold enough perhaps, but it didnt seem to matter much when I did try it fully chilled... the keg had a fill line that I roughly observed. always was too much work for a substandard result.
The form factor of the sodastream is nice, but I’m confused that a keg setup wasn’t getting the water fizzy enough. Getting a small adapter to transfer from a bigger tank to a sodastream canister is the simplest solution imo.
