Whaaaaaaaat, the Biden administration also wants to force Germany to buy American fracking gas instead of the stuff from Russia? :surprised-pika:

It's so inefficient and expensive to transfer natural gas over the Ocean, too.

They can't even provide a half-decent alternative! Naked Imperialism in Europe is a nice new twist, though. :agony-soviet:

This is what will really cause me to start believing in the collapse of the US. Berlin is starting to strike a more pragmatic tone when it comes to China, and the EU is always angling for that superpower space (of course the interior gets austerity measures)

The US has been a continuous train-wreck for two decades. Don't think for a minute that Germans have failed to connect the dots between our Iraq Adventure and their current refugee crisis + economic stagnation. The Germans are also far more precariously positioned against fluctuations in the energy markets, and Russia is literally brimming over with natural gas (which, not coincidentally, will help reduce Germany's reliance on Polish coal power and curb the continent's greenhouse emissions overall).

Meanwhile, the US keeps trying to shove new missile installations into Eastern Europe that basically nobody else wants. The US keeps threatening stability in North Africa, setting off waves of new migrants across the Mediterranean and up through Turkey. And the US constantly meddles in European politics, with guys like Steve Bannon fanning the flames of ethnic nationalism Merkle's government absolutely does not need right now.

Clinton and Obama were, for better or worse, at least willing to play ball with the EU. Bush, and Trump, and now fucking Biden's loser cronies all seem hell bent on tipping over the apple cart. If I were German, I wouldn't want anything to do with the US beyond what was economically vital.

Based on that interview his original job in Brazil was as a business reporter from when Brazil's economy was on the rise. Not a slight against him in any way, it's just sort of fascinating that international and political coverage can basically no longer exist without the framing of economics and investment.

Nordstream 2 is an affordable way for Germans to hear their homes. Do these people not realize there's a purpose to a natural gas pipeline to a cold country that doesn't involve America?

The main reason is to cut out Eastern Europe out of the pipeline without affecting supply to Germany, and to get rid of some transit costs. There is no real need for Nordstream to get gas to Germany, it is just that Russian gas companies can't shut off the valve to Poland or Ukraine without also shutting off the supply to Germany, which would be a huge problem. Conversely, those countries could also shut off supply to Germany and Western Europe, which would also cause issues. Nordstream put those transit countries in a weaker position compared to Russia. The easy reason for the US being against Nordstream is Ukraine, where a lot of pipeline infrastructure is situated today.

I remember doing assignments about this back when it was just Nordstream almost 20 years ago, way before Euromaidan and back when Schröder was chancellor.

Geopolitics aside, let's not act like there aren't more efficient ways to heat homes than burning a bunch of gas. This is just the German government yet again not giving two shits about the environment and refusing to invest into hydrothermal solutions.
