Ah sweet! Something incredibly common that I'd never given second thought to is actually terrible in a way that seems blatantly obvious in hindsight

And it's not just .io, there are a bunch of other ones as well, things like .sh for Saint Helena, and .ac for Ascension Island. The more you look, the worse it gets. There are some exceptions like .tv, which is for Tuvalu, but funds from .tv actually go to the people of Tuvalu and are used to fund things on the island like their "Future Now" project, which provides mitigation plans for infrastructure and maritime boundaries affected by climate change.

that's the nation which has decided to completely abandon their homes because there is no hope of salvage?

possibly the most forward thinking group of people on the planet.

It hasn't been abandoned yet, it has a population of about 11,000 people, but I can see it happening in the future if we don't do something about the climate crisis. :(

Every time I think I know enough about the colonial powers to paint a picture of their barbarity, I am proven wrong with more horrors beyond my comprehension coming forth.

This reminds me that the TLD .nu was stolen from the island of Niue, along with it's profits, by The Swedish Internet Foundation in 2013. Apparently important for Sweden's national security or something. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.nu

While on this topic, does anyone know what became of the .zip thing?

Worse than silly, it's a massive corruption machine that generates massive rents from literal text files. It gets even worse when you realize that rich politicos have literally committed treason by violating embargos to colonize fake digital territory that they themselves created. It's just mind blowing.

Not as far as I'm aware, it's a common TLD for spammers and scam websites, so it may be seen as suspicious, but it's actually managed by a Chinese company!
