As someone who loves looking at alternate history and world building, especially with maps, it’s infuriating how every other post on r/imaginarymaps is something like this. Lib/chud wish fulfillment is painful to look at.

    SZECHWAN

    KWANTUNG

and of course they're using a bullshit romanization developed by a former British soldier who fought in the Opium Wars

maybe I am misunderstanding but I don't think pinyin was around then? but you're right, it's not intrinsically bad

except pinyin is consistent, and maps to actual sounds, and wade giles just seems like a guess at most points. like the S in "shanSi" and "kanSu" are different consonants, and the Ks in "Kiangsu" and "Kansu" sound nothing alike. they even use a K for "chungKing", which is yet another consonant sound...? not to mention they use "Ch" to spell like three different sounds. "Shansi" and "Shensi" actually have the same first vowel sound, just different tone, but let's put a different letter there why not.

Sorry to necropost, but I just want to sign off on everything you say. The way that 'k' works in Wade-Giles is so incredibly stupid that it makes me angry beyond words to think about it too much.

Chongqing is an interesting one because if you say it in Cantonese it is pronounced Chung-hing, which is awfully close to Chungking...but again, what the hell is going on then with the k!?

Gwoyeu is entirely Anglocentric and quite possibly specifically Taiwanese in its pronunciation and must be a huge pain in the ass to learn and write in , but it is the prince of intuitive English romanization. It's like phonics for Chinese. It literally teaches you how to pronounce the language correctly as you read it:

            • I am American. I study hard so I can read books in the Chinese language.

            • 简体:我是美国人,我为读书而努力学习中文。

            • Pinyin: wo shi meiguoren, wo wei dushu er nuli xuexi zhongwen

            • Gwoyeu Romatzyh: .uo .shy .mhei.guo.rhen .uo .uei .du.shu .el .nhu.lhi .shiue.shi .jong.uen

Zhao Yuanren we didn't deserve you!

Lol so they cancelled the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region — even though Zhuang is the 2nd largest ethnicity/nationality in China, and even though Guangxi has the LARGEST number of non-Han peoples? It's almost like non-Han peoples only matter to these nationalist chuds if they can be used to "own" the CCP.

Also what kind of clueless numbnut would deprive Tianjin of a seaport/shoreline: Tianjin literally means "The port [jin] of the Son of Heaven [tian]."

May they die in their wet dreams. Goodness gracious these people.

Atleast this isn't some lib wet dream about balkanizing China, instead they made America with Chinese Charactaristics.

Also lol at the KMT flag but with a little butthole.

Sinkiang too instead of Xinjiang. I like the game but my god, it is not a completely accurate source for any information pertaining to the non western countries at all, far from it in fact.

Isn't it purposefully using older romanization to match the time period?

I’m not 100 percent sure. All I know is that now the area is called Xinjiang, so if this map is from the future, why would it be called sinkiang? Even if it’s a correct name from the past it wouldn’t make sense to use it for the future unless your only source of geography is hoi4

That's exactly it. HOI4 isn't particularly wrong to use the spelling since it's contemporary. But whatever idiot made this doesn't know anything else about the region.

Edit: or maybe they think Pinyin is some evil communist invention and that a restored republic would use old, western made spellings because CCP bad.

Sorely tempted to go on there with a map of the United States labeled Mexico

Except for Hawaii, which will be labeled "Dead White People"

Same with much of the United States.

It sounds like both countries should be working together in good faith to help stop these wet-bulb temps from happening. For their own good as well as the rest of the people and animals on this planet.

In reality, one of the two parties allowed to hold power in the USA won't believe in climate change until it can do eco-fascism, and the other party will do the bare minimum until it can also do eco-fascism.

It's a warlord state in HoI 4 lmao

Redditors only know geography from Paradox games, I swear.

      spoiler

I mean same, but, maybe the person who made the map should have researched it a bit better :fidel-sarcastic:

Fucking same. Even before I pretty much stopped using Reddit I had stopped bothering to look at that sub bc every time it would come up in my feed itd be some “the world if neoliberalism was all” or some shit.
