This did give right wing idiots plenty to talk about on youtube. And teenage me at the time watched plenty of those. If I remembered correctly, the thing that really pushed me to that direction was a short film of sorts of an organization named "SCUM", it's content is just two young woman with a pistol, sneaking up to some middle aged dude resting on a chair, shooting him in the head then danced as he slumped over. I was very distressed by it and thought it could happen to me.
Eventually they weirded me out and I snapped out of it. Mostly because they:
- Constantly repeating they are "defending western civilization"
- Talking about "the west" like it's inherently superior, I should mention I'm not from "the west"
- Fixation on men being "better" than women, like in terms of physical strength and supposedly has a higher tolerance of stress
- Defends sex pests and womanizers at every turn
- Uses token minorities to support their argument before dropping them out of the conversation
- Even me, being an idiot at the time, could tell they are making issues out of nothing and quoting people out of context
Also I looked at leftist videos against them out of curiosity. Dismissively at first. Eventually the points they made did stick.
What pushed me across "enlightened centrism" was my country suddenly became the enemy of the west within a year for no apparent reason. When the entire internet suddenly turned hostile, leftist spaces became the few places that I can browse without seeing or receiving hate. Those spaces always have people posting links to theory and that's that. (I guess there's also the nationalist/fash circle of my country but they've always disgusted me with their obsession on hating neighbors, militarism and anti-lgbt stance even back when I was daily watching sargon of akkad)
"We did the last one and things ended up fine for us."
They won't need a reason.
