My favorite take on this development:

Not because I agree with it, but because how absurd that a guy with that name is saying it.

He's right that it's easy to fill a void left by western nations (but mostly America) being so phenomenally shit. Hopefully this works out the way the China-lead Iran-Saudi Arabia talks did - all China needs to do is be a fair arbiter and they'll have all the credibility they could possibly ask for.

Western skill issue. I would simply not give unlimited military and political support to a genocidal apartheid state.

China: treats non-Western nations like rational human beings

Western nations: stop it, diplomacy is evil!

China has had diplomatic relations with the Arab nations since about 650 CE, when Dr War's ancestors were squatting in mud huts trying to recover from the collapse of Rome, but it's the Chinese who have no legacy.

Not being deeply involved, I imagine, is part of the appeal. They can play neutral arbiter without inflaming old grudges

What do you mean you want the accused criminal to be judged by someone who isn't their half brother and best friend? What about credibility and legitimacy and legacy?!

Their values aren't "inconsistently applied", they do not have values.

China has a lot of credibility in the Palestinian conflict, stretching back decades. With the founder of the PLFP saying “China is our best friend” and Yassir Arafat saying , “China was the biggest influence in supporting and strengthening our revolution.”

Exactly. Just goes to show how historically uninformed, or even misinformed, most westerners are. This is part of why I try to defer to global south comrades, they seem to have a better grasp on things than I do even after years of intense study.
